Learning for Life

English

At Belmont, we believe that a high-quality English curriculum should develop a child’s love of reading; their creative writing and ability to discuss their ideas articulately. We want our children to develop the habit of reading widely and often and we aim to inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage. Through children’s interaction with a wide range of high quality texts, we will foster pupils’ cultural, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development.

We recognise the importance of cultivating a broad vocabulary and aim to create a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of purposes.

We want to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening; to equip them with the skills of critical thinking and develop their use of discussion and debate to develop their learning.

At Belmont Junior School, we ensure that pupils develop the strong foundational English skills they need to thrive in Key Stage 2 and beyond.

Our English curriculum is well‑sequenced, ambitious and designed to build secure knowledge over time. Children learn to read with increasing fluency and confidence, developing the comprehension skills needed to understand, discuss and enjoy a wide range of texts.

Pupils learn accurate spelling, fluent handwriting and secure grammar so they can express their ideas clearly and creatively. We place particular emphasis on handwriting fluency, ensuring pupils develop a comfortable, efficient pencil grip, correct posture, and the fine‑motor control needed for sustained writing. These routines help pupils write with increasing speed, accuracy and stamina as they move through Key Stage 2.

Vocabulary is a key focus, with pupils regularly exposed to rich, high‑quality language across all subjects. By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident readers, articulate speakers and capable writers who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

We believe that a thorough grasp of literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully across the curriculum and as a valuable member of society.
